Well, that’s a Surprise!

I just logged into Goodreads after a lengthy time away from the site and found a book I’m hoping to publish on 14 December 2015 up on my Author Dashboard.

That took me aback until I remembered that I shared the cover & description to a lovely promoter who’s organizing a blog tour for the book in December. I thought this was a nice surprise, especially since I think I had to add my last couple of  books.

As of now, Chosen has 4 people who have listed it as To-Read. That’s 4 more than I had expected to see, so it’s nice.

I think the description needs some work so that may be changed but I thought I’d share the screenshot, especially since it made my day.

Boy, Snow, Bird

I couldn’t sleep last night so I thought I’d read a book.

Big mistake.

Once I started Boy, Snow, Bird by Helen Oyeyemi, I couldn’t stop. I stayed up til dawn reading until I finished the very last page.

Boy, Snow, Bird was so different from the books that I read recently. I was completely entranced. I loved its blend of fairytale and myth, set against a dark time in U.S. history. The mystery surrounding Boy was fascinating, as was the ultimate reveal. The lyrical prose of Helen Oyeyemi made me wish I had her talent as a writer. The self-involved part of me enjoyed that there were characters named Vivian and Agnes (like those in my own novel).

From what I can see the book has mixed reviews online. I can see why it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Now I’m off to find more works by Helen Oyeyemi to add to my lengthy TBR pile on Goodreads.

CryoBurn by Lois McMaster Bujold

In an attempt to add even MORE books to my To Read shelf on Goodreads, I browsed the list of Hugo and Nebula nominated novels over the past few decades. When I saw CryoBurn on the list, I blinked. It didn’t sound like a familiar title and I was sure I had read every single book Lois McMaster Bujold has come out with. I couldn’t believe I hadn’t read this book in the Miles Vorkosigan saga!

I read the book in two sittings. It was bittersweet. I loved being immersed back into Miles’ world even though he was an adult (with four kids!). Seeing Roic again was nice. I’m glad he’s become comfortable with being Miles’ Armsman even if Roic still had a penchant for dramatics whenever he thought he failed Miles. It was interesting seeing Miles be more responsible even while he was turning an entire planet upside down. And I loved seeing Mark. Mark amuses me.

The ending took me aback. I did not expect it to end that way. The drabbles at the end of the book brought tears to my eyes. I won’t spoil it for you but it’s a must read.

I hope there are more Miles books in the future. I’m not sure how much I like this new responsible Miles but he reminds me of his father. I also would love more books with Civil. I love the whole Barrayar cast.

TV Addiction

Ever since Ramadan started, I can’t seem to stop watching old episodes of Top Chef. I don’t know why I keep torturing myself with beautiful shots of delicious meals on a daily basis. Right now I’m really tempted to buy a plane ticket to fly to Boston and just feast for days on end.
