Generating Art Project

Come Fall, I’m planning to walk around the city and neighborhoods and take pictures of the various artwork one can find around Kuwait. I touched on this on my last post “Musings“.

One of my projects is to explore the art that covers up the electricity generators/hubs in neighborhoods. You could be walking around the city and you pass this on your walk. Art Kuwait City Electricity Generator HubWould you even notice it at first glance? Would you wonder what was inside?
Would you think it was an electricity generator/hub? I’ve had many friends who lived in Kuwait for years without noticing them until they were pointed out. The art serves its objective at disguising the hubs and not drawing attention to the buildings that stick out like a sore thumb.

Some of the artwork that is painted on these generators represent Kuwait’s history. Others promote national unity, with patriotic messages. Others still have religious messages and/or morals. Sometimes it just depends on what neighborhood you’re in. One of my plans is to visit different neighborhoods and see which ones stand out.

I’m not sure who is in charge of painting the artwork. Is it funded by the government or sponsored by various organizations? Maybe it’s the neighborhoods that decide? I have no idea. Hopefully I’ll learn more when I start researching them.

Here is a close-up of the artwork pictured above. I’ll make more of an effort in the Fall to take better photos. I just zoomed in for this one. The text above the clenched fist says “الكويت يد واحدة” that is “Kuwait is one hand“.

Art Kuwait City The hand has been colored with Kuwait’s flag: black on the left, green on top, white center, red on bottom. Below in orange, you can see a skyline of Kuwait.

If you look at the blue section near the palm tree, you’ll see the same flag is painted on an outline of Kuwait.

I’m excited to discover all the different artworks available in neighborhoods. It will also force me to truly look around and see what’s around me.

Musings

  • The 27 Week Project Update: Time to confess, I only went to the gym once since Monday. I haven’t been watching what I’m eating and so I’m dreading Monday’s weigh-in. I’ll have to hit the gym extra hard this weekend.
  • Writing Progress: I had an editing deadline yesterday and another next week. It’s been a little hectic trying to get everything on time because of personal issues. Several family members are in the hospital and it’s tough finding time to do things. I’m still thankful because it could have been much worse, I could have missed my deadline.
  • Travel: I’m excited about visiting Glasgow & Edinburgh. It’s coming up soon! I can’t wait to go on the walking tours I’ve scheduled. And I can already predict I will be spending a lot of time in bookstores!
  • Fall Projects: I want to be active this fall and go on walking tours of the city. I’ve been planning ahead of what I’d like to blog about. For example, I’d love to showcase the random art that surrounds us in Kuwait. I’ll post a separate post about that later.
  • TBR pile: I have 632 books. I’m wondering whether it’s worth sitting down and trimming it down. Maybe when I have a spare minute or two…
  • More Books:  I’m super excited that Robin Hobb has a new book coming out mid-August! FOOL’S QUEST! I can’t wait to get more Fitz!
  • Movies: At this rate I feel like I’m never going to have time to watch Ex-Machina. I also need to remember to watch Dope. I wonder if any good movies will be playing when I’m in the UK. Off to check…

Boy, Snow, Bird

I couldn’t sleep last night so I thought I’d read a book.

Big mistake.

Once I started Boy, Snow, Bird by Helen Oyeyemi, I couldn’t stop. I stayed up til dawn reading until I finished the very last page.

Boy Snow Bird Helen Oyeyemi

Boy, Snow, Bird was so different from the books that I read recently. I was completely entranced. I loved its blend of fairytale and myth, set against a dark time in U.S. history. The mystery surrounding Boy was fascinating, as was the ultimate reveal. The lyrical prose of Helen Oyeyemi made me wish I had her talent as a writer. The self-involved part of me enjoyed that there were characters named Vivian and Agnes (like those in my own novel).

From what I can see the book has mixed reviews online. I can see why it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Now I’m off to find more works by Helen Oyeyemi to add to my lengthy TBR pile on Goodreads.

Eid Mubarak

Eid fell on Friday. It’s been three days of me being cooped up at home working on edits. I’m making progress but I have to hustle to meet my next deadline.

For a change of scene, I made plans to meet friends for brunch tomorrow. It would be nice to get some sun. I also have to run some errands before work resumes on Tuesday.

I’m not looking forward to going back to work but at least there won’t be many people at the office. Most people decided to take the three days off and travel; I’m expecting a light workload. I’m hoping I will have time to work on my edits during the workday.

Vacation Planning

I just bought my ticket to the UK for mid-August. I couldn’t decide which city to go to so I’ll be splitting my time by visiting both Glasgow and Edinburgh. If I like those two cities I may try to see more of Scotland in the future. I think those two will be fun to visit for now.

I’m still hotel-hunting. Prices are high due to the summer month (peak season) and the Fringe. I’m going to try to catch some of the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh. Hotels in the city are at around 75% occupancy.

Most of my friends are going to be in the South of France and Spain. I was tempted to join them but ultimately thought it was time to do something different and new. I’d like to visit the Baltic states in the near future. It’s time for me to wander off the beaten path and find a new path to travel on.

At the moment I’m pleased with my decision to go to Scotland. To prepare, I’ve put together a list of a few Scottish highlander romances to read 😉
